What can I put in my Hippobag?

You can use your Hippobag for ordinary household, garden, DIY and builders’ waste.  Please don’t use it to dispose of hazardous or specialist wastes like contaminated plasterboard (or gypsum material) asbestos, batteries, electrical goods, liquids, chemicals, or food waste.  However, we can recycle your uncontaminated plasterboard if it's kept clean and segregated from other waste. Just give us a call if you'd like to find out more, or if you're unsure about any other waste that you would like to dispose of.

You can also download a full list of the waste streams that we can and can't accept here.

Where should I put my Hippobag?

Firstly, why not watch our video:

Ideally, you should position your Hippobag before you start to fill it (to avoid having to move it and damaging the bag, or worse yourself), and please keep in mind that the road needs to be at least 4m wide for our collection lorry to gain access, and that the bag must also be positioned within 4m of the road for our cranes to be able to reach it.

We can't drive onto block paving as our lorries could cause damage, and likewise the area also needs to be clear of obstacles such as overhead trees and cables, or parked cars.  Our driver will need to reach the bag handles to hook the crane on, so positioning the bag behind locked gates can pose a problem.

For further details on filling and positioning your Hippobag– please refer to the outer packaging or label found on your Hippobag.

Do I need a skip permit?

Depending on where you want to place your Hippobag and on your local council, you may need to apply for a skip permit to place a Hippobag on the road or pavement. As the permits are specific to each council the rules of obtaining one do vary, but you can read more about this here.

Where can we collect from?

Where can't we collect from more like!

We'll collect from anywhere on the UK mainland, apart from some very remote postcode areas which our lorries have difficulty reaching.  If you want to check your area, just give us a call on 0845 850 0 850.  Other than that, as long as we can access your Hippobag, we’ll collect it. Just make sure you let us know about any parking or loading restrictions that might affect collection e.g. red routes etc.

I’ve changed my mind – can I get a refund?

We hope you won’t change your mind but if you do and you bought the bag directly from us, you have up to 28 days to request a refund.  All you need to do is let us know your contact details and information relevant to the purchase, then return your Hippobag to us unused and in its original packaging.  When we’ve received it, we’ll cancel your order and issue a full refund.

In accordance with the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, you can not cancel your order once the collection service part of the package has started. Therefore, it may not be possible to cancel a collection request after the end of the working day on which you booked the collection.

If you bought the bag from one of our stockists then you may be able to return it to them, but it will be under their terms and conditions and your statutory rights.

Someone else has offered to pick up my Hippobag and they’re cheaper, how is that possible?

When you start filling your Hippobag, you might find it draws some attention. However, if someone does offer to collect your bag then do beware of any price that seems too good to be true - it probably is!

There’s a chance your waste could be removed by a rogue trader who pockets your hard earned cash before simply fly-tipping your waste. Not only is this illegal and not very kind to our environment, if the waste is traced back to you, you could face a hefty fine.

You can help avoid this situation by asking for details of their waste carrier’s registration. Hippowaste is registered as a waste carrier, we offer collections across the country and pride ourselves on delivering an excellent service – our prices reflect this. However we still remain one of the most cost-effective methods of waste disposal.

What happens to the waste?

All the waste removed in a Hippobag is taken to a Waste Transfer Station that has been licensed by the Environment Agency and audited by us personally. Here it is sorted and separated with as much material as possible (on average over 90%) going on to have a second life.

If the waste really can’t be reused or recycled then unfortunately, it ends up being taken to landfill. Hippowaste actively supports all initiatives that aim to divert waste from landfill and endeavours to pass on any tips or advice to customers about boosting recycling whenever they can.

Do I get the bag back?

No. Since we don’t know what you and your Hippobag will get up to without us, we cannot guarantee its credibility for more than one use. Hippobags are a single trip skip bag so we’ll take it away and recycle it along with the rest of your waste.

How does a Hippobag compare to skips?

It’s difficult to make a direct comparison between our skip bags and traditional skip hire because they are so different. Hippobags come in different sizes and often suit different types of project dependant on the amount of waste they produce. However, they are usually cheaper as you don't pay for wasted space - or for anyone else’s rubbish that they might put in there.

Hippobags are also ideal for when you have smaller quantities of waste, when you have limited space on your property and for when you’re planning a project but haven’t quite got around to starting it!

How long have I got to use my Hippobag and collection?

Our prepaid bag and collection service is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase. The price paid at the time of purchase is valid throughout this timeframe. If you wish to arrange a collection after this time you may incur a surcharge. We may send you a reminder from time to time if you haven’t used your Hippobag.
