What can I put in my HIPPOBAG?
The HIPPOBAG is intended for the disposal of ordinary household, garden, DIY and builders’ waste only. Please don’t use it to dispose of hazardous or specialist wastes like plasterboard or gypsum material when mixed with other waste, asbestos, batteries, electrical goods, liquids, chemicals, or food waste. You can download a full list of prohibited waste streams. If you’re in any doubt, simply call us. However, we can recycle your uncontaminated plasterboard, find out more here.
Our HIPPOBAG skip bags are great for: a skip hire alternative, loft clearance, garden waste removal, kitchen rip-out disposal, bathroom rip-out disposal, bulk waste collection and cause less stress than traditional skip hire!
Where should I put my HIPPOBAG?
You can watch our video here.
Ideally, you should position your HIPPOBAG before you start to fill it (to avoid having to move it and damaging the bag, or worse yourself).
4 metres is the distance you should always keep in mind when using your HIPPOBAG. The road must be at least 4m wide for our collection lorry to gain access and the bag must be positioned within 4m of the road. Our cranes don’t stretch any further than this and our lorries might damage block paving so we can’t drive onto this.
Make sure your HIPPOBAG is accessed by a road that is 4m wide, is within 4m of the road and clear from any surrounding or overhead obstacles like trees, cables, parked cars, locked gates etc.
For comprehensive details on filling and positioning your HIPPOBAG skip bag – please refer to the packaging and bag label. Placed correctly, the HIPPOBAG skip bag offers an ideal alternative to skip hire. To find out more about the HIPPOBAG waste solution compared to traditional skip hire, please click here.
Where can you collect from?
It’s probably easier to ask where can’t we collect from! HIPPOWASTE is a national company but at the moment this bag and collection package is restricted to mainland UK areas. This also excludes some remote postcode areas where our lorries have difficulty reaching.
Other than that, as long as we can access your HIPPOBAG, we’ll collect it for you. Make sure you let us know about any parking or loading restrictions that might affect collection e.g. if collection is required from a road that is part of the red-route network.
I’ve changed my mind – can I get a refund?
We hope you won’t change your mind but if you do, you have up to 28 days to request a refund if you brought the bag directly from us. If you brought it from one of our many stockists then you may be able to return it to them, but it will be under their terms and conditions and your statutory rights.
If you brought from us directly simply let us know so we can amend your details and return your Hippobag to us unused, and in its original packaging. When we’ve received it, we’ll cancel your order and issue a full refund. In accordance with the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000, you can not cancel your order once the collection service part of the package has started. Therefore, it may not be possible to cancel a collection request after the end of the working day on which you made arrangements with us.
Someone else has offered to pick up my bag and they’re cheaper, how is that possible?
When you start filling your HIPPOBAG, you might find it draws some attention. Hopefully people will simply be envious of your clever idea. However, if someone does offer to collect your bag then do beware of any offer that seems too good to be true, it probably is! There’s a chance your waste could be removed by a rogue trader who pockets your hard earned cash before simply fly-tipping your waste. Not only is this illegal and not very kind to our environment, if the waste is traced back to you, you could face a hefty fine.
You can help avoid this situation by asking for details of the waste carrier’s licence. HIPPOWASTE is registered as a waste carrier, we offer collections across the country and we pride ourselves on delivering an excellent service – our prices reflect this but we still remain one of the most cost-effective methods of rubbish removal!
What happens to the waste?
All the waste removed in HIPPOBAGs is taken to Waste Transfer stations that have been licenced by the Environment Agency and audited by us personally. Here it is sorted and separated with as much material as possible (usually over 80%) going on to have a second life. If the waste really can’t be reused or recycled unfortunately, it ends up being taken to landfill. HIPPOWASTE actively supports all initiatives that aim to divert waste from landfill and endeavours to pass on any tips or advice to customers about boosting recycling whenever they can.
Do I get the bag back?
No. Since we don’t know what you and your skip bag will get up to without us, we cannot guarantee its credibility for more than one use. HIPPOBAGs are a single trip skip bag so we’ll take it away and recycle it along with the rest of your waste disposal.
How does a HIPPOBAG compare to skips?
It’s difficult to make a direct comparison between our skip bags and traditional skip hire because they are so different. HIPPOBAGs come in different sizes and often suit different types of project compared with a skip. However, they are usually cheaper so if you don’t want to pay for wasted space in a skip (or for anyone else’s rubbish they might put in there!) a HIPPOBAG should be ideal for you. They are also perfect for when you have smaller quantities of waste, when you have limited space on your property and for when you’re planning a project but haven’t quite got around to starting it!
How long have I got to use my HIPPOBAG and collection?
Our prepaid bag and collection service is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase. The price paid at the time of purchase is valid throughout this timeframe. If you wish to arrange a collection after this time you may incur a surcharge. Should you wish to arrange your collection with HIPPOWASTE after this date, you may incur a surcharge. We can send you a reminder from time to time if you haven’t used your skip bag.
